Where Can I get Dental Insurance?
Insurance is often purchased through third parties who form the financial basis for whatever plan they offer. Here are the main three types of third party companies.
Employer
Many people are able to get insurance through their work or their spouses work. They may or may not offer a choice of plans. And even if your employer does not pay for dental insurance as part of their benefits, they may be able to offer it to you at a reasonable cost when you pay for it.
Many employers are going to Self Funded Insurance. The employer decides the premiums and deductibles and any other pertinents. You pay the dentist up front then submit the receipts to your employer. He in turn reimburses you from company funds set aside for this purpose.
Dental Service Corporations
Companies and sometimes individuals can purchase insurance through Dental Service Corporations. These are not-for-profit companies that negotiate and administer dental care plans. They are not out to make a profit off of premiums or anything else. Examples of this type of third party company are Delta Dental Plan and Blue Cross/Blue Shield.
Insurance Carriers
These are for profit companies. They underwrite the funds needed to pay for your dental plan. They process the claims and the type of contracts they carry can vary from managed care to traditional insurance, often within the same company.
Individual Insurance
Employers can choose from any of the three types – Dental Service Corporations, Insurance Carries or Self Funded – to purchase policies from. Not every company will sell to the individual person. Many sell to groups only. You can find dental insurance several ways – by asking your friends and your dentist, look in the yellow pages of the phone book and by searching on the internet.
The internet is a great way to compare prices and services. Shop around and get a second opinion. Make sure you are getting what your family needs. If it sounds like too good a deal, it probably is. You get what you pay for so beware; if they offer something for free, that just might be the value of it.
Do you have teens that will need braces? Do you want to have total choice over providers and treatment? Do you want the basics or all the bells and whistles? These are all things you need to decide before signing on the dotted line.
